Today's blog post is about how sugar affects weight loss.
Now insulin helps regulate blood sugar by either burning it for energy or converting and storing the excess as fat.
When you keep eating a high amount of sugar, insulin levels are high and your body eventually becomes resistant to insulin. The body will not be able to burn fat and therefore store it. So, ideally, that's how sugar can make us fat. Too much of it will not be converted to energy and will be stored as fat, especially in the belly area.
But fruits that tend to carry sugar also have other nutrients like fiber and vitamins compared to something like chocolate which will have loads of sugar and no other nutrients. Experts say they have empty calories.
That being said, it is better to have natural sugar compared to processed sugar as natural sugars will help reduce a spike in blood sugar, especially because of the fiber in them. The fiber in fruit helps slow down the sugar introduction in your body meaning fewer spikes.
You know when you eat a chocolate bar and all of a sudden you get a boost of energy and you want more and more of it. That is usually a result of blood spikes. Often known as a sugar rush. After a while, all this energy usually goes away(sugar crash). It is also dangerous as the high spikes of blood sugar can lead to high blood pressure and eventually a stroke. So, if you crave something sweet go for a fruit instead.
It is also important to know that people that get about 20% of their calories from sugar are more likely to die of heart disease.
According to nutrition experts, a human being is supposed to have at most 100 calories of sugar a day. That is around 6 teaspoons of sugar. Now, that is not a lot and more often than not we cross that line.
Sugar does affect weight loss and to keep it in moderation we need to try to have less of it. Try to avoid foods with too much sugar like snacks and always eat fruits in their most natural form. In other words, try to avoid anything that comes in containers and boxes. If you can make your healthy version of a cake at home rather than buying a store-bought one.
Final conclusions,
Sugar is not at all bad, but should be in strict moderation.
Love you, Wanja.
